With people more willing than ever to seek better opportunities, here are the top reasons why great people leave companies.
Reason Number 1: They don’t see their work as valuable.
This means management has somehow failed to show them how their specific contribution is key to the company vision.
Reason Number 2: They can’t see sufficient opportunities for advancement or personal growth.
The opportunities may really be there, but if management hasn’t formally identified them, they’re not real. Achievers don’t hang around for vague possibilities.
Reason Number 3: They’re not getting to work in their strength areas.
Talented people who were hired by you just to “fill a slot” in a hurry don’t last long, if that slot never really fit their talents.
Reason Number 4: They have unrealistically high goals and expectations themselves.
Talented people need constant growth in their jobs. If the job you hired them for has turned out to be less than it should be, and you know it, change this situation fast! Overachievers need “evolving” jobs to stay happy.
Reason Number 5: They don’t see a strong enough connection between their compensation and their performance.
Surprisingly, people will wait the longest under this tension than any of those mentioned above. But, at some point, if they have hit all their goals and you don’t respond financially, they’ll start to shop your competitor. Imagine how short an interview that will be.
