- This isn’t “All in the Family”. If you have family members as principals in your business, beware of the fact that they may say “No” to a lot of the agency’s ideas. Why? Because ads are emotional by nature. But ads need to stir how a prospect should feel about your business, not how a co-owner might feel. Think prospect, not principal.
- Words matter. It takes more than a gift with words to write good ads. Otherwise your English teacher cousin could do it for you. It takes knowledge of how people’s minds make buying decisions, even of how eyes move across a page of copy in a split second. Good agencies do know these things. Let go of micro- editing their work.
- Don’t “Bargain Shop” Your Image. If you go for the cheapest agency around, you’ll be sorry. Agencies can only stay around because they get results, and they should be able to charge for that success. Don’t pay absolute top dollar, but choose an agency that’s been around for three years or more, even if it makes your budget squeal a little. After all, it is your image, right? And you are worth it.
- Time proves all things. Give your agency a decent amount of time and attempts to get results. After all, this is the first time they’ve heard of your business, and it will take some time to get the message right. If they’re the right people and you’ve got a good product, chances are you’ll be sending them Holiday cards for a long time to come.
