Overcoming the “I’m Too Busy for Coaching” Objection

Good morning, fellow coaches. I‘ve heard it many times, and so have you, the familiar objection by business owners regarding coaching: “ I just don’t have the time to dedicate to being coached right now” . I’d be interested in getting some feedback from some of you on how you’re answering that one.

Here are a couple of my thoughts:

The best one word answer to this objection of being too busy to be coached is : “Exactly”. Just say that to them and then shut up. Let it sink in that their very statement of being time blitzed is itself one of the great reasons they need a coach.

Another good response is to say: “I understand. What are some other things in your business and your life that you’re too busy for?” Let them itemize that answer, and then follow up with “If my coaching could free up 20% of your time to give to these things in six months, how much of a value would you place on that gift?”

Finally, listen for what this objection really says. It’s like the classic sales objection of not having any money. It usually means they just haven’t been sold enough on the value of what you do, and it's time to retrace those value issues in your presentati0n with them. If they get the value and benefits of your coaching, they’ll skip an episode of 24 each week and invest time with you.

As always, if you have any stories or questions to share, I’d love to hear them!

I like this question. My answer is this: First, agree with them--as you suggested. Second, ask more questions to find the real objection. Is it "I don't know or trust you?" Is it "I don't have the money?" Is it "How can I know if coaching really will make a difference?" Or is it something else? You won't know unless you ask lots of qeustions. When you know the real objection, you can find a solution. Finally, if time really is a problem for them, and you're a good story teller, you could tell the old saw about Sharpening the Saw.
