Get Ready to Be Fired…

Good morning, fellow coaches. Yes, that’s right, I said get ready to be fired. Not a very motivating way to start a blog entry, I know, but branding that phrase into your mind as a coach can be one of the safest things you can do to ensure you stay in business. Why?

Because in coaching as in no other industry, the customer buys one thing: YOU. And they decide every billing period whether keeping YOU (your expertise, your passion, your commitment, your value) is something they want to write another check to do. So how are you doing in communicating to your clients the ongoing value of YOU?

Remember, Sam Walton once said, “We all have one boss, the customer. And she can fire us anytime she wants by deciding to go shop somewhere else.”

So send a letter, make a call, jot an e-mail, or recommend a project to every one of your clients today, just to show them the value of what they’re paying for.

Because we all really have only one boss.

As always, if you have any stories or questions to share, I’d love to hear them!

Joe

Thank you for this insightful post. It's true when you say the only thing our customers buy is us - and so if we don't give it our all, we better get ready to be fired.

Thanks again, and keep up the good work!

It's often the obvious that eludes us. Keeping in touch and reminding the people you coach about the value added seems obvious, but we sometimes need to be reminded of the simplest things. They can tend to prove to be massive in their returns.

What do you recommend to us coaches facing the 2009 year in this economy? You say to be prepared to be fired but can't we keep our clients happy and keep them as clients?

WOw..it is a bit shocking but yes I would agree that customers are the boss. They choose what they like and we need to be ready for their actions.

At the heart of what you are suggesting is that an executive coach needs to be innovating all the time, not only in their own personal approach but on behalf of the clients they serve.

Great article! I would agree that we should provide tangible proof of the value we bring to the table. it's our jobs to spell out the value.
Thanks!

Well, it got my attention. Great teaching for coaches here. I'm not a coach, but I serve coaches, and I really like to see great resources I can provide for my clients. Thanks.

Couldn't agree more -- branding is VERY important when it comes to being a coach. You're selling yourself, after all. If you don't stand behind your own brand, who will hire you?

I am doing a business so that I always think customer is my boss. I like this theory for good business like send a letter, make a call, jot an e-mail, or recommend a project to every one of your clients for better business.
