Generating Real Enthusiasm In Your People

I enjoyed penning an article this week on helping business owners generate positive, “ownership attitude” in their operations. I had a lot of fun writing it, and I’d like to invite you to check it out on the home page of the website.

While I was writing the article, it caused me to do some thinking about a prerequisite that has to be in place in a leader’s life before he or she can call people to an attitude of excitement. That prerequisite is the ability to be real as a leader. People call it authenticity; I call it the condition in which your key people know that when you relate to them, they’re getting the real deal. It’s important because people don’t follow shadows. And people won’t get genuinely excited about your business if they don’t believe you are a genuine person.

Without going into an online therapy group session here (since we’re being real here, for the record, I hate those), let me just point out two things I encourage clients to build into their style to ensure a better connection with their followers.

  1. Make your decisions based on your values. This is so key. If your followers see no consistency in your actions with your stated values, they’ll suspect you over the long term as a “user” rather than a true “believer”. They’ll also never know what to expect from you, so they’ll be guarded and noncommittal. Making every decision in alignment with your core values is the commitment I’d make.
  2. Open yourself to opposing opinions. Seek the harsh truth from your key people. This requires and communicates humility, and nobody operates “in the real” as a leader without humility.

Join me in chasing these best practices with your clients this week!
