The Value of Values
Great business leaders forge ahead with their ideas and visions. Sometimes they are right. Many other times they are wrong. And it's important to know when to cut your losses. Read Seth's post to get the complete picture.
As for being required to become someone you are not, individually or organizationally, then you or your model is not sustainable. If not now, then later. Someone will know. Then everyone will know. And you'll have gone down a path lacking integrity. Without integrity you will not succeed. Because integrity is a key to success. There is more than one key.
If you mutate your brand, or worse yet, you don't take the time to craft your brand, you're values are out of whack. Because you really can't fool the market. So mutating into something you're not will never help. When company values are out of alignment, the mission is doomed for failure. At BusinessCoach.com we teach that company values lead to company commitments. They are part of the company fabric. And when properly crafted, stated, and communicated, people will respond. The business will flourish.
If your people are in alignment with your company values, the actions they take will lead to success, assuming you do everything else well. The business of business is messy. So begin with values. Act with integrity. Say what you mean. And mean what you say. Be what you mean to be. Don't fake it.
I'm not sure that any of my business coaching clients are "the best" in their industry. Nor may Seth mean it in this regard. The way I see it, being your best means planning well to constantly get better. (I don't think many people realize how truly difficult planning is. I believe is true because most don't plan much at all. So they would never really know how difficult it is.) However you define this. Because if you compete well in your sector, and your business is profitable and sustainable, you don't necessarily need to be number one. Although this may be a good goal for true market leaders, my clients simply focus on disciplined business planning, execution, and goal achievement.
Goal achievement is more the definition of success for our clients. So get really clear on your values and commitments, personally and as an organization, and the business of business gets better. Values have value in business.
