Some People Believe Everything They Read and Hear

After all, fear sells I guess. And with the media tooting the recession horn, people begin to buy into it. As an example, my wife and I were eating lunch in a Scottsdale restaurant and the conversation at the table next to us (yes, it was too close) was about politics, the economy and random family-related issues that I chose to tune out. I don't eavesdrop on people by choice. But when I heard one of the women at the table broadcast that "we're in a recession" it was all I could do not to add my two cents.

I'm not sure whether this woman even knows what the word recession means, but she was darn well convinced we're in one. Drives me nuts. This is an example of how the media can negatively influence people's opinions. Some people believe everything they read and hear. I believe this is mostly true for those who aren't in a position to make an informed decision as to whether we are in a recession or not, for example.

Like I said before, whether we hit a recession or not, business leaders have a choice. They can bury their heads in the sand and hope the recession storm blows over. Or they can take a stand for what they believe for their respective business and industry. Then they can further modify and develop a business or strategic plan to market better, sell more, spend and invest wisely, and grow the business in a prudent fashion.

As a former financial advisor with several major Wall Street firms, we used to have a saying. "There are good investments in bad economic times and bad investments in good economic times." So once again, it boils down to a business leader's outlook and how they communicate their plan of action to their organization. Attitude.

So take the news on the recession with a grain of salt. Don't bury your head in the sand. Develop a plan to grow your business in good or bad economic times.

As always, warm regards.
