Retreat to Recapture Your Vision

Good morning, readers. Last time, the blog topic was fighting the “wear away factor of vision” in our businesses. Today I want to think out loud with you about a way to recapture vision on a regular basis. I want to talk about the discipline of creating a regular block of time in your schedule to get alone and re-fire your dreams. I call it a Vision Retreat, but don’t let the term throw you. I’m not talking about having to take a weekend away to do this, although we advise a yearly company getaway to do just that for each one of our clients. In fact, at BusinessCoach.com, we believe so much in annual retreats of this type for our own business that we’ve made it one of our company commitments for several years now.

Shorter times of private focus, however, are just as important. I personally seek to invest two hours every other week in a personal retreat where I focus on my business vision and progress. This is calendared time that is guarded jealously. I head off to a place away from the office where I can find quiet and isolation. My written Vision Work comes with me, and my personal journal and calendar. Here’s what I did the last time out:

The first hour was spent on “re-emotionalizing” my Vision. Getting in touch with the personal reasons I want to hit my goals. I am a fan of visualizing the end results of hitting my goals, so I practice seeing the images of my future in my mind’s eye that will come from the financial payoff of getting there. This may be something you do, too. For me, a personalizing aspect of this is practicing personal prayer in regard to my business vision according to my faith tradition. Ever tried that?  It helps me focus on the faces of the people whose lives I am literally in business to change.

The second hour I spent going through two vision boosting questions that I borrowed from Brian Tracy’s book Turbo Coach, on Creating a Personal Strategic Plan. Here they are:

  1. What one goal, if you achieved it over the next 90 days, would help you the most in realizing your business vision?
  2. What one additional skill, if you became excellent at it over the next 90 days, would help you achieve your most important business goal faster than any other skill?

I had some good stuff to commit to after this two hour mini-retreat to recapture my vision. How are you doing this in your business experience? Care to share a story that backs up what I’m saying?

Maybe as a leader you’ve got some great tips to share with us. I’d love to hear your thoughts or story.

Send me a quick comment below.

I look forward to getting you know you.
