It’s Monday Morning. Have You Changed Something in Your Business Yet?
Good morning, fellow leaders. Quick, what is your biggest responsibility as the leader of your enterprise? According to the late great Peter Drucker, who defined management science over the last fifty years, the most essential role of a business owner is to create change. That’s right, change. The very thing you spent all weekend trying to figure out how to avoid is the very thing Drucker said you need to create more of if you are going to prosper. Reason? Change has already been created at light speed while you slept by the marketplace. You have got to be in motion to meet it.
Unfortunately, this greatest business responsibility collides with the greatest human fear, that of experiencing loss. That’s what old Abraham Maslow proved in his hierarchy of human needs pyramid, namely that we will fight hard to get food and shelter, but then we will fight even harder to protect what we’ve gone out and gotten. You, my business owner friend, need to battle against this instinct. You must be willing to risk your comfort by changing something every day in your operation. You must be willing to control your own changes today so you don’t get rolled by someone else’s changes tomorrow.
I meet business leaders every day who talk to me about “trusting their gut” on business decisions. That’s a key strength to have when you're in the hot seat. But there's one area where you have to ignore your gut: the area of resisting change. Your gut will yell “NO!” to you every time on that one.
Ignore your gut. It’s Monday morning. Go change something in your operation.
As always, if you have any stories or questions to share, I’d love to hear them!
