Hey, Boss. Your Numbers Are In…
Good morning, fellow leaders. As you know, in a few of my past lives, I slugged it out in a variety of selling bullpens, banging out the prospecting calls, hitting my sales goals, chasing my bonuses and my mortgage payment ( which were often both the same thing!). So I know what it’s like to sit in a Monday morning sales meeting and be confronted with “my numbers”. It’s a normal part of the selling life.
Well, CEOs have numbers too, and not just the bottom-line related ones. Here are two numbers many CEOs miss, to their detriment:
1. The number of people “actively engaged” in their jobs. Gallup Research indicated recently that this number stands at a miserable 29% in the corporate workforce. That means 71% of the people on the job are just doing enough to get by, wishing with two thirds of their hearts that they really weren’t there.
2. The number of managers who “regularly recognize” the achievements of their workers. According to a recent survey of CEOs, barely 15% of these leaders admitted to giving regular recognition. Amazing.
These two numbers go together. The second produces the first. And when you multiply them, they produce a failing company.
I know that if I had ever operated at 29% of my sales goal as a seller, I would have had ninety days max to turn that number around, if I had been allowed to stay around at all. CEOs with lousy people numbers, in my experience, have a little longer before the bell tolls for them. But toll it will, even for you, if you don’t learn how to develop and acknowledge people.
So, boss, how are your numbers?
As always, if you have any stories or questions to share, I’d love to hear them!
