First Things First
So when people ask me what business coaching is all about, I usually tell them it's about one or both of these issues. Coaching by itself sounds too nebulous for some people to really get what it means. Business owners get it when you tell them that the coaching process is designed to efficiently and profitably grow a business. Yes, there's transformation. Yes there's really powerful stuff going on. But most of my clients want more business and better people. And they want these things NOW.
In order to affect change in any aspect of the business, the business coach must get the client to focus on essential fundamentals first. For example, crafting the proper Vision and Mission Statements. Sounds easy, but you'd be amazed how many people get stuck on this. How about a Strategic Plan that gets reviewed on a regular basis? A new client just pulled the plan from last year right off the shelf where they left it. So we start from there.
If the business has no real plan in place, chances are that growing sales or solving the recruiting problem isn't terribly realistic. How about job descriptions and a real commitment to happy, productive employees? Getting there requires a serious commitment to do the basics and build from there.
These are just a few of the business fundamentals that get overlooked too often. As coaches, we understand why. Business owners must train themselves to work "on" the business, not just "in" the business. Owners must stop to take time and plan properly. The planning must get communicated throughout the organization. Without the fundamentals in place, the business will always sit in a more precarious spot.
So keep "First Things First" in mind and focus on the fundamentals of sound business planning to get the results you want. Once the proper planning is in place, accountability measures and execution will follow.
As always,
Warm regards.
