Annoying Boss Habit Number Eight
When the boss favors someone over others it drives people crazy. I remember how it felt when a former boss' "drinking buddies" would get the best leads or account transfers. Here I was working my butt off making three hundred dials a day, bringing in great numbers for new business, and it was clear that others were playing the game better better than I with the boss.
We all like to be recognized for what we bring to the table. We want credit for our ideas and contributions. And we want equal treatment, at a minimum. Come to think of it, I never minded being "the favorite" on the few occassions it happened. How about you? But when it comes to affecting the team, and results at work, it's just unacceptable.
Jeffrey Gittomer, the sales guru and author, insists that the secret to success in selling is being liked. He maintains that being liked is even more important than being trusted. You have to be liked to be trusted. And the same is true in the work arena when it comes to our bosses, peers, and subordinates. If you haven't read the Little Red Book of Selling by Jeffrey Gittomer, take a look at it. He makes some great points related to sales, but they can apply to every aspect, every department if people open their minds.
But sometimes, no matter how hard we try to play by the rules, get results, and be liked, it just doesn't work. Someone else is liked more. Shown favors. Skid gets greased. In this instance, just learn to rise above it. Focus on your goals more intensely. Commit at a higher level to affect change. Adapt.
How have you dealt with a boss who favors a few?
As always, warm regards.
