An Interview Question That Will Reveal Volumes

Good morning, fellow leaders. I was going over some material on interviewing job applicants for a client recently, and I came across a gem of a suggestion that I thought I’d pass on to you.

When interviewing a job applicant, bring the first interview to a close with this question: Can you give me three examples of lessons you’ve learned from previous bosses?

By their reply, you’ll learn a number of things: whether they are naturally curious people who learn on a constant basis; whether they had a respectful view of their bosses; and whether they have advancement potential based on their CQ (Curiosity Quotient).

If they can’t really think of anything that they’ve learned from any previous boss, that should give you pause. There can’t be that many dimwitted bosses in the candidate’s past. The issue is most probably a lack of interest on the part of the candidate.

If they do give you a positive, interesting answer, follow up with this question: That’s great. If you worked here, what would you hope to learn from our company?

That could set up a really great second interview conversation, no?

As always, if you have any stories or questions to share, I’d love to hear them!
